Partial Solar Eclipse Event

MANDALUYONG CITY—Rizal Technological University-Department of Earth and Space Science (RTU-DESS) spearheaded a public observation for the partial solar eclipse, March 9.

With the help of the DESS’s finest telescopes: H-Alpha, Calium-K and Dobsonian—students, guests and RTU staff were able to observed this astronomical phenomena—which made them amused and astonished.

Also present in event were: Dr. Jesus Rodrigo Torres, RTU President; Ms. Ruby Dela Cruz, DESS Head and guest students from New Era University (NEU).

What is a partial solar eclipse?

Partial Solar Eclipses happen when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, but they don't align in a perfectly straight line. Because of this, the Moon only partially covers the Sun's disc. (Source: www.timeanddate.com)

NAW 2016 Opening

MANDALUYONG CITY—RTU Astronomy Society (RTU-AstroSoc) opened this year’s National Astronomy Week (NAW) with the theme TALA: The Art of Learning Astronomy, February 15.

On her opening remarks, RTU AstroSoc president Ms. Julie Ann Delda, gratefully thanked all the speakers, students and guests who attended this year’s NAW.

Lectures were held by BS Astronomy Technology alumni, namely Mr. Kelvin Martinez (Batch 2012), Mr. Miguel Artificio (Batch 2013) and Mr. Jerome Felicidario (Batch 2015).

Mr. Martinez tackled about Astronomy Misconceptions, here he talked about the common mistakes of people in the field of Astronomy like: astronomy is related to astrology, seasons are due to the earth’s location from the sun and shooting stars are falling stars. Followed by Mr. Artificio, he talked about Telescopes. From its history, types and structures.

Succeeded by Mr. Felicidario, his lecture, entitled A Glimpse of the Big Bang. He discussed the paradigm shift of the understanding of the origin of the universe—from the Physics of Aristotle to the Physics of Einstein.

Moreover, lectures were balanced by fun and exciting games namely: Laser Race, Pass the Alien Message and Cosmic Calendar.

Astronomy Seminar

New Information and Ideas, Gateway for Public Awareness.

The Rizal Technological University Astronomy Society (RTU-AstroSoc) organized a seminar last November 23, 2012 which was held in the Research and Development Building Research Auditorium with the theme “New Information and Ideas: Gateway for Public Awareness”.

With the whole room jam-packed with guests from other departments, the program was officially started at exactly 1:30 p.m. with the opening remarks by the current RTU-AstroSoc president Mr. John Christian Lequiron. This was then followed by a solemn prayer and the singing of our National Anthem. After the opening remarks, the first person to do his talk was Mr. Richard Aragon.

Mr. Aragon, a current professor in the Rizal Technological University and a graduate from the University of the Philippines- Diliman Campus with the degrees B.S. in Chemistry, M.S. in Chemistry, and Ph.D. in Chemistry, discussed about Chemical Evolution and the Origin of Life. His talk was all about how primeval organic elements present on the planet Earth long time ago formed biomolecules which are the basic building blocks of life. Guests were permitted to ask questions after his talk. Next to do his talk was the RTU-AstroSoc’s very own Mr. Jerome Felicidario with his presentation entitled “Space Junks: A Hindrance in Space Exploration. He elaborately discussed things about space junks- what are they and where did they come from. Solutions on getting rid of these space junks were said too.

After an intermission number, Mr. Reuel Norman Marigza, a graduate from Silliman University, discussed all about astrophotography. Well, almost all people who were enticed in astronomy grew their interest by looking at pictures of astronomical bodies. Proper techniques on taking pictures of celestial objects were explained very well. Mr. Marigza ended his discussion with a quote by Ansel Adams which is “You don’t take pictures, you make it.” He was then followed by an interactive talk by Ms. Rochelle Derilo which was all about light pollution. Her way of discussing was very engaging as well as informative. She first enumerated the different causes of light pollution and its surprising negative physiological and ecological effects. She then gave copies of an operating system with astronomical applications to those who answered and asked her some questions.

Certificates were then given to the presenters and guests at around 5 o’clock in the evening, signifying the end of the seminar.  This was then followed by an observation activity on the RTU quadrangle which lasted until 9 o’clock of the same evening.

ALP's Public Viewing

RTU-AstroSoc joins ALP's Public Viewing

Last February 25 2012, Sunday, one of the biggest events happened at the Rizal Technological University, Department of Earth And Space Sciences, Astronomy Society. The Astronomy League of the Philippines (ALP) conducted their closing program in celebration of the National Astronomy Week at RTU.

Lecture presentations were given by well known individuals and members of the RTU Astronomy Society and ALP such as Mr. Norman Marigza, Christopher Go, Mr. John Ray Cabrera, Dr. Armando Lee and Dr. Reinabelle Reyes.

Mr. Cabrera discussed about the composition of our universe such as dark matter, ordinary matter and dark energy.

Dr. Jett Aguilar tackled the different observable features of the sun such as solar prominences, corona, sun spots, flares and others.
Mr. Go discussed the different tools and ways used to enhance the raw image or video file of a planet or planetary imaging. He featured and performed some computer software that is used to enhance images of planets such as REGISTAX.

Mr. Marigza discussed the different possible "attacks" of the universe in our planet (black holes, super novae, big rip, gamma ray burst attack, etc.). Despite the threats imposed by the universe on us, Mr. Marigza put a smile on his audience as he discussed his lesson together with jokes that fits the lecture, much to our delight.

After the presentation of the lectures, ALP and CUTTING EDGE, one of the sponsor of the event, awarded a certificate for all the presenters as an appreciation for their time and willingness to share their knowledge especially for the astronomy students. Last but not the the least, Mr. Ty addressed his closing remarks to end the program.

Later in the afternoon, The ALP conducted a public viewing at the RTU quadrangle right after the program up to 10:00 pm. The astronomy students even the University staffs such as the guards, maintenance crew, varsity players, and students of RTU actively participated. Some of the celestial objects seen are the moon, Jupiter, Venus, Pleiades, and the other common heavenly objects.

ALP's celebration of the National Astronomy Week ends up after the public viewing. But as the activity ends, the astronomical journey through knowledge sharing to the public is still the biggest deal for us Filipinos who study astronomy here in the Philippines.
