SOLAR OBSERVATION October 20, 2012

Last October 20, 2012, the 4th year BS Astronomy Technology students advised by Ms. Ruby Dela Cruz have conducted lectures on Basic Astronomy and solar observation to children age 5-12 yrs old. The aim of this project was to increase the awareness, interest and knowledge of children on Astronomy. The activity run from 12:00 to 3:00 PM in “Paraiso ng Kabataan” barangay Barangka Ibaba, Mandaluyong City.
The program started at exactly 12:00NN. The excitement and eagerness of the children to learn were seen in their faces. Princess Tucio lectured about the Sun. She mentioned numerous facts and general information about the Sun. Her lecture was interactive, she raised questions randomly, the participants were excited to answer and give their ideas. Another lecturer was Harry Merida, His talk was about the telescopes, He explained the importance of Solar filters attached to the telescope during Solar observation, that is to provide safety and protection on the eyes of the observers. He also gave information and trivia about the history of the telescopes. After the lectures, the participants lined up properly to observe the Sun , All of the participants witnessed sunspots for the first time. After two lectures and solar observation participants were given nutritious food and drinks. The young participants were satisfied, some of them even said that we didn’t just feed their tummies with snacks, but we have also fed their minds with new knowledge about Astronomy.
